When will works start?
The works will start early/mid-February 2023.
When will works be completed?
The road works are expected to take 2 years and be completed by start of 2025.
Why is WDC doing this?
To connect the new developments and growth cells with the rest of the community in a cohesive and safe way. This work is really going to make it easy for existing and new residents to choose to walk, cycle or take the bus and connect with schools and the town.
Where is it happening?
The works are happening along Hamilton and Cambridge Road, between Vogel Street and Grassroots Velodrome.
What are the new developments?
The new developments include 2,500 new residential homes, Cambridge Ryman Retirement Village, a new primary school, a recreational reserve and playground, neighbourhood shops and supporting underground infrastructure.
Will there be a diversion?
Yes, a diversion road to minimise traffic disruption during construction along Cambridge Road is in place for the next 16 months while contractors lay storm water pipes and complete the construction of the new single-lane roundabout.
The length of the diversion road will be marginally small and will start just past Te Awa Lifecare and will divert back onto Cambridge Road.
How many new homes are being built?
2,500 new residential homes and Cambridge Ryman Retirement Village.
How will this impact traffic?
Motorists and cyclists can expect traffic disruption, with reduced speed limits and traffic management in place. Some impacted roads will go down to a single lane with stop/go signs in place. We’ll try to minimise disruption as much as possible but we are asking road users for some understanding and also urging them to keep speeds down
Will we see an increase in rates to accommodate costs?
No there will be no increase in rates to accommodate these road works.
What sort of infrastructure will be built to help support the new developments?
To prepare for the infrastructure and ensure the new developments connect the community with rest of town in a cohesive way, we’re completing a range of roading upgrades that will see the Hamilton Road Cycleway extended, connect new subdivisions to Cambridge Road, a new 3 metre wide shared walking and cycling path, a signalised pedestrian crossing across Cambridge Road and new bus shelters for our residents and visitors.
How long will the intersection and roundabout road works take?
The works will take 16 months for completion from the start date.
Why is a roundabout being installed?
The C2/C3 intersection will enable the Cambridge growth cells to be developed. With the significant current and future growth planned, new and upgraded transportation infrastructure is required to support the development and provide safe and well-designed road network.
