Demand a poll on electoral system
As a result of a recent change to legislation, the last date for demand from electors for a poll is now 11 December 2023, and not 21 February 2024 as appears in the advertisement below.
Notice is given under section 28(1) of the Local Electoral Act 2001, that the Waipā District Council has resolved at its meeting on 30 June 2023 to retain First Past The Post as its electoral system for the next two triennial general elections of the Waipā District Council and its community boards, and any associated election.
Electors of the Waipā District Council have a right to demand a poll in accordance with section 29 of the Local Electoral Act 2001 to countermand this resolution and instead use the Single Transferable Voting electoral system for the next two triennial general elections of the Waipā District Council and its community boards, and any associated election.
Should sufficient valid demands for a poll be received, a poll will be held on whether the First Past the Post (FPP) or Single Transferable Vote (STV) electoral system will be used. Unless a poll determines otherwise, the First Past The Post electoral system will continue to be used for the Waipā District Council.
A valid demand must be:
- Made in writing, and
- Every elector who signs a demand must also set out their full name and the address for which they are qualified as an elector of the Waipā District Council.
A poll will be held if demands, signed by at least 5 per cent of the number of electors enrolled as eligible to vote at the previous triennial (2022) general election of the Waipā District Council, are received prior to 5pm on Monday 21 February 2024. This will require 1,980 valid elector signatures.
Demands should be marked for the attention of Warwick Lampp, Electoral Officer and delivered to Waipā District Council offices, 101 Bank Street, Te Awamutu 3800 by 5pm Monday, 21 February 2024.
