Community groups invited to shine
Waipa's community groups are being urged to register for free exhibition space at next year's launch event for the district's 150th commemorations.
A community commemorations committee is helping co-ordinate a year-long series of events to celebrate the years 1864 - 2014. Celebrations kick off on Waitangi Day [February 6] next year with a huge community expo at the Mighty River Domain.
Community relationships manager Wayne Green said the launch event was a family-focused fun day to help celebrate the vibrancy and strong sense of community in the Waipa district.
This is about Waipa people coming together to celebrate being part of the district and the community. The domain will be packed with food stalls and games and there will be plenty of entertainment on offer including a twilight concert.
Community groups were being invited to get involved and were being offered free exhibition space at the Mighty River Domain for the day.
There are a huge number of community groups in Waipa doing all sorts of great things. This is chance for those groups to promote themselves and let everyone know what they're about.
Mr Green said the day was intended to be hands-on and groups would be encouraged to host interactive stands and displays.
We're not just looking for displays. We'll provide the free space and some logistical support and we'd like groups to really encourage people to have a go at whatever it is they do. It's about encouraging the community to come together and participate in some of the things that make our district great.
A number of groups had already indicated they would be there, but there was plenty of room for more.
A number of other activities were also planned for the 150th commemorations that would be highlighted by street banners in major towns as well as banner flags in Leamington, Kihikihi, Ohaupo and Pirongia. Major iwi-initiated and organised events to mark New Zealand land wars battles are planned for Rangiaowhia, Waiari and Orakau.
Mr Green said he hoped families would make a day of it on Waitangi Day and picnic at the Mighty River Domain, enjoy the entertainment and displays and be reminded of why they love the district. Community groups wishing to register their interest in being in being involved should email events@waipadc.govt.nz.
