Free breakfast for cyclists
4 February 2011
Waipa residents who cycle to school or work on 'Go By Bike Day' next week (Wednesday, February 16) will be treated to a free breakfast and the chance to win spot prizes.
Waipa road safety coordinator Megan Jolly said breakfast for cyclists will be served outside the BNZ bank in Cambridge and Te Awamutu between 7.30am - 9am on Wednesday, February 16.
The initiative is part of 'Bikewise', a national event encouraging kiwis to leave their cars at home and cycle to work or school instead.
Ms Jolly said cyclist numbers were growing in New Zealand, with about a third of the population, 1.27 million people, owning a bike. A fifth of those people say they cycle regularly.
Other Bikewise activities on February 16 include the annual Mayoral Cycle Challenge, where residents can cycle 5 or 10km alongside Mayor Alan Livingston.
The ride starts and finishes at the Leamington Domain in Cambridge with registration from 5.30pm. Everyone who registers will go into a draw to win a bike and can nominate a Waipa school of their choice to win prize money for sports equipment and uniforms.
Children under 10 years old must be accompanied by an adult. Sport Waikato's Team Energise will be running activities for children aged 4 to 9 who are not participating in the bike ride.
Ms Jolly said that behind the fun activities, Bikewise carried a serious message that cycling was a practical and healthy way to travel.
"Along with walking, cycling is very sustainable. It gives people the ability to adapt their lifestyle to changes like fuel shortages and price increases. It can save money otherwise spent on fuel and car expenses. It causes virtually no noise or air pollution and contributes to an active, healthy lifestyle.
Waipa's Bikewise events are sponsored by Avanti, Fresh Choice, BNZ, Sport Waikato and the District Council.
