Temporary liquor bans to be introduced at Mighty River Domain
28 October 2011
A temporary liquor ban will be introduced at Might River Domain, Lake Karapiro for certain events this summer as Waipa District Council seeks to maintain the family friendly atmosphere.
The bans will exclude the hours from 5pm to 9pm to allow people the opportunity to socialise informally and include all 19 hectares of the domain with the exception of the Don Rowlands Centre, the Rob Waddell Lodge and chalets and leased facilities.
Property advisor Jane Blackmore said in recent years there had been an increase in the number of visitors to the domain and the consumption of alcohol, particularly during organised events and over the Christmas/New Year period.
As a result, there had also been an increase in the number of alcohol related incidents resulting in police being called.
The temporary bans would be used as a preventative measure and were supported by police.
It is the view of council staff, site staff and police that limiting the consumption of alcohol on site is appropriate given that many of the daytime sporting events proposed to be covered by the temporary bans involve children, said Ms Blackmore.
The site manager and staff will monitor compliance on liquor ban days and the police will be called upon to enforce the ban if required, she said.
Those events affected by the ban will be published in newspapers and on the Lake Karaprio and Waipa District Council websites at least seven days before the events start.
A review will be carried out next year to gauge the success of the temporary bans.
