Victoria Bridge to reopen today
7 September 2011
Victoria Bridge will be reopened today (Wednesday, 7 September) following the results of investigations into a slip that caused concern over the bridge's stability.
Service delivery manager Barry Bergin said the results of investigations, including a soil stability analysis, showed the slip had not compromised the supports and the bridge could be reopened.
Remedial works have been ongoing during the bridge closure. However, there is some further erosion protection work needed and ongoing monitoring of the site will be necessary until that work is complete.
Based on the information gathered during the investigations we are satisfied that closing the bridge was appropriate given the limited knowledge we had of the bridge foundations, said Mr Bergin.
Public safety is our number one priority and we have not ruled out closing the bridge again should there be a need before the remedial works are complete, he said.
