Summer family adventures in Waipā will burst into action and fun with the biggest
playground in the district set to open in the new year.
The new park in Cambridge’s Bridleways Estate will include a destination
playground, expected to attract tamariki and whānau from across Waipā and the
wider Waikato region.
The $3.7 million playground is being built by developers 3MS in coordination with
Waipā District Council. This new subdivision is part of one of Cambridge’s growth
cells which includes up to an estimated 2500+ new houses, Cambridge Ryman
Retirement Village, and supporting infrastructure.
Waipā District Council group manager district growth and regulatory services Wayne
Allan said the new playground is being funded through development contributions
which help cover the cost of infrastructure and amenities the council provides to
support growth.
The council contributed $2.7 million of developer contributions and 3MS invested an
extra $1 million to make it a destination playground.
“Developer contributions are ring-fenced for that specific development. They can
only be used to fund the infrastructure activity they were taken for,” Allan said.
Manager community services Brad Ward said the playground will be a welcome
addition to the district.
Highlights will include an in-ground trampoline, a flying fox, a custom-built tower and
an accessible carousel alongside more traditional play elements such as swings,
sandpits and a basketball court. There are also features for musical and water play.
“The park will appeal to people of all ages and abilities, with a wide range of
features, equipment and facilities,” Ward said.
The park will offer plenty of recreational opportunities for all, with exercise
equipment, BBQ and picnic tables, plenty of seating, toilets and a shared pathway.
“It’s a terrific addition to the wide range of outdoor community facilities on offer for
Waipā whānau.”
Local landscape architects Line and Design created the plan, and play construction
specialists Fluhler Contracting are building the playground.
