Dog Control Bylaw
In addition to our Dog Control policy, we are required by legislation to have a Dog Control Bylaw: Dog Control Bylaw 2023
Dog Control Act 1996
Do you understand what is required of you as a dog owner? The following is taken from Section 5 of the Dog Control Act 1996.
The Act requires every owner of a dog to:
a) Register the dog from three months of age and promptly notify the council of any change of address or ownership of the dog.
b) Ensure that the dog is kept confined or under control at all times.
c) Ensure that the dog receives proper care and attention and is supplied with proper and sufficient food, water and shelter.
d) Ensure that the dog receives adequate exercise.
e) Ensure that the dog does not cause a nuisance to any other person, e.g. by barking or howling or any other means
f) Ensure that the dog does not injure, endanger, intimidate, or cause distress to any person.
g) Ensure that the dog does not injure, endanger, or cause distress to any stock, poultry, domestic animal, or protected wildlife.
h) Ensure that the dog does not damage or endanger any property belonging to any other person.
i) Comply with the requirements of the Dog Control Act 1996 and of all bylaws made under this Act.
