Trade Waste
What is a Trade Waste
Trade Waste is any liquid that is discharged to the wastewater system from commercial, industrial, manufacturing or trade premises resulting from any processes or operations.
All businesses that discharge to the wastewater system will need to apply to the Waipā District Council for a Trade Waste Consent.
Trade Waste Consents are the agreements between the Waipā District Council and the owners/occupiers discharging Trade Waste, that define.
- The volume of wastewater that can be discharged
- The nature and characteristics of the discharge
- The type of pre-treatment required prior to discharge
- Service and maintenance requirements
Trade waste shared services
In July 2012, Waipā District Council joined with Hamilton City Council and Waikato District Council to launch Shared Services for trade waste, aiming to deliver integrated, sustainable and well-managed services that also protect and enhance the environment.
Trade waste customers will receive a consistent trade waste service across the three council territories, while shared staff and resources will ensure a streamlined and efficient business model.
For the councils, the benefits include improved compliance and monitoring, and an effective user pays approach to trade waste.

Charging formula
The formula for calculation of the load based trade waste charge is as set out below.
(V x Vc) + (SS x SSc) + (BOD x BODc) + (TKN x TKNc) + (TP x TPc)
Parameter | Fees & charges 2024/25 |
Vc Flow Volume | $1.57/M cubed |
SSc Suspended solids | $1.35/kg SS |
BODc Organic Loading | $1.50/BOD |
TKNc Total Kjeldahl Nitrogen | $1.57/kg TKN |
TPc Total Phosphorus | $6.40/kg TP |
Connection or disconnection fee | $552.00 |
Table of parameters with descriptions | |||
V | The volume discharged | BODc | The unit of BOD charge $/kg |
Vc | The unit volume charge $/M cubed | TKN | The mass of Total Kjeldahl Nitrogen (TKN) discharged |
SS | The mass of suspended solids discharged | TKNc | The unit TKN charge $/kg |
SSc | The unit SS charge $/kg | TP | The mass of Total Phosphorus (TP) discharged |
BOD | The mass of BOD discharged | TPc | The unit TP charge $/kg |
