Ōhaupō Pedestrian Crossing FAQs
1. Why have we chosen this location?
This is the best location for drivers to see people waiting to cross the road and is a 'desire line' for pedestrians, which means many people already use this location to cross Great South Road (SH3).
2. Why are you using traffic signals?
Due to the high traffic volumes and the speed limit on Great South Road (SH3), traffic signals are the safest option for pedestrians in this environment.
3. Will the new crossing delay traffic on State Highway 3?
Traffic on Great South Road (SH3) already experiences significant delays in Hamilton and to a lesser extent in Te Awamutu. Most traffic will not experience any delay resulting from this project as the pedestrian signals will only be on red when a pedestrian wishes to use it.
4. Are you removing any parking?
No, we are not reducing the number of parking spaces in the town centre, we are formalising parking which means we’ll add painted white lines to the road to outline parking spaces, making parking easier and more efficient.
5. What about trucks will they still be able to stop on the main street?
Yes, trucks will still be able to park on the main street.
6. Where will the bus stops be located?
The new bus stops will be located on SH3 outside Ōhaupō Caravans (heading north towards Hamilton) and African Bean Café (heading south towards Te Awamutu).
7. Was the community consulted with on this project?
Yes, in 2021 we shared our plans for a new signalised crossing on Great South Road (SH3) with Ōhaupō residents and asked for their feedback on the design.
We received support for the crossing, and we also received feedback from people expressing concerns about the speed of vehicles through town and the location of the bus stops. As a result, we’ve made some changes to the initial design. These changes include raised safety platforms that will slow down vehicles as they approach the crossing and a change in the location of the bus stops.
8. What changes have been made to the original design?
Following feedback from the community in 2021, we made some changes to our original design. These include creating three raised safety platforms on SH3, as well as changes to the location of both bus stops.
We think the new locations of the bus stops will help to optimise traffic movement and parking availability, and the raised safety platforms will slow vehicle speeds through town and on the approach to the crossing.
9. What is Council doing to make sure businesses aren’t negatively impacted by construction?
Prior to construction, we’ll be in touch with Ōhaupō businesses to provide a detailed plan of what they can expect. Throughout the project we will continue to work with businesses in the area to help minimise any effects and mitigate any concerns they have.
Our top priority is constructing a safe crossing point for residents with as little disruption as possible to the surrounding businesses and those traveling on Great South Road (SH3).
10. Has Council considered including time limits on parking spaces in the town centre?
No, but this is something that we will listen to the community on, and if necessary, we could look to implement time limits for parking.
