Assessment underway at Cambridge’s Lake Te Ko Utu
Assessment underway at Cambridge's Lake Te Ko Utu
18 January 2013
An assessment of both the ground and tree condition around Cambridge's Lake Te Ko Utu is underway following the failure of several trees over the last few years.
The latest incident occurred just before Christmas in which a tree that fell caused another to be uprooted.
Waipa District Council parks and reserves team leader Max Ward said on initial inspection the trees seemed to be in good health and appear to have failed due to a combination of factors that relate to the steepness of the banks around the lake and the size of the tree.
The assessment will provide a practical action plan that will include advice on clearing and plant replacement including suggested planting lists, said Mr Ward.
The first priority tasks were to identify and remove hazardous trees in high exposure areas along paths and replant where trees are removed.
Following this the priorities are removal of weeds, revegetation with appropriate species, improvement of stormwater management, stopping vegetation disposal on banks, and monitoring. Any removal of vegetation should be completed in conjunction with a replanting programme, he said.
The report is expected to be completed within the next few weeks.
