Parks and reserves
We manage more than 130 parks covering more than 3540 hectares. Of this, over 2702 hectares is held in 14 conservation parks. There are 20 sports parks, 32 neighbourhood parks, 40 general amenity parks, and four premier parks. Some park lands are grazed until such time as they are needed for active recreation.
- Premier parks provide high quality experiences in key locations such as Mighty
River Domain at Lake Karāpiro, Te Awamutu Memorial Park, Te Awamutu Rose
Gardens and Te Koo Utu Park in Cambridge
- Conservation parks provide for the protection and enhancement of the natural
environment and allow for low impact recreational use. These include
Maungatautari Ecological Island and
Kakepuku, and Lake Rotopiko (Serpentine) and Lake Ngāroto.
- Sports parks provide for a wide range of physical activities and sports, such
as Kihikihi Domain, Albert Park and Castleton Park sports grounds in Te
Awamutu, and the Leamington Domain and Town Belt in Cambridge
- Neighbourhood and amenity
parks
provide urban communities with
recreational opportunities for children, walkways and cycle linkages.
Future parks are identified in strategic town planning processes and are aligned with national guidelines. The development of individual parks is identified through reserve management plans and strategic plans for our significant parks. Council-administered buildings and facilities on these parks are maintained and managed in accordance with asset management plans.
