Cambridge's high level Victoria bridge closed this weekend for resurfacing
8 January 2013
Cambridge's high level Victoria bridge will be closed to vehicles this weekend to allow the deck to be resurfaced.
Waipa District Council has engaged contracting firm Downer to undertake the work between the hours of 6pm on Friday and 6am on Monday.
Road corridor manager Dawn Inglis said that while the bridge would be closed to vehicular traffic to allow the work to take place, pedestrians and cyclists would be accommodated where possible.
We recognise this is an important link between Leamington and Cambridge and have attempted to undertake the works at a time that will cause the least disruption to the community, said Ms Inglis.
The work has also been scheduled when traffic flows are expected to be light, but we do appreciate that this will inconvenience some users. We apologise for this and appreciate driver's patience during this work.
The type of bitumen being used to resurface the bridge needs to be applied at optimal temperatures that are achieved during the day and the end result will be a much smoother surface for vehicles, she said.
The bridge's handrail will also be cleaned while the traffic control and detours will be in place during this period.
If wet, the work will be postponed until the following weekend.
Updates will be posted on the council website www.waipadc.govt.nz and on its Facebook page www.facebook.com/WaipaDistrictCouncil.
