Cambridge’s Victoria Bridge closed on 14 July
28 June 2013
The Victoria Bridge at Cambridge will be closed to vehicle traffic on Sunday 14 July from 9am to 4pm for an engineering inspection.
Pedestrians, cyclists and mobility scooters will still be able to use the bridge while the inspection takes place. In case of poor weather the alternate date for the inspection is 21 July.
Engineers from Bloxam Burnett and Olliver will examine the bridge structure, and also take measurements for replacement footpaths that will be installed on the bridge, Waipa District Council Road Corridor Manager Dawn Inglis said.
The bridge is a significant transport link for the Cambridge area, and we've timed the closure for a Sunday in order to minimise the disruption to the community, Ms Inglis said.
Access between Leamington and Cambridge will still be possible by using the low level Ferguson Bridge between Shakespeare Street and State Highway 1. Alternatively traffic heading north can travel via Cambridge Rd, Kaipaki Rd, Mystery Creek Rd and Airport Rd. Detour signs will be in place on the day of the closure.
Delays are possible in the vicinity of the bridge and motorists are advised to avoid the area if possible on 14 July.
Emergency services have been notified, and electronic signs will be placed at either end of the bridge to alert regular users from about one week prior to the closure.
