Chance to meet a champion
26 November 2013
Waipa residents will have an opportunity to meet world-ranked equestrian, Andrew Nicholson, at a special event to be held in Te Awamutu in early December.
Nicholson, a multi-medal winning Olympic rider, will attend the event in his hometown organised by Waipa District Council to celebrate and recognise his on-going world-class performance. Mark Todd and Nicholson are the first New Zealanders to compete in six Olympic Games and are the most capped Olympians from any sport.
A short drive in an open top car will start at 4.15pm. The car will go from Anzac Green, down Alexandra Street and onto Arawata St to finish at Selwyn Park and culminate in an opportunity to meet and congratulate the world-class Waipa horseman. There will be an opportunity for autographs and photographs.
Waipa Mayor Jim Mylchreest said the event was an important part of celebrating the success of people who had their roots in the district rightfully known as the Home of Champions'.
People like Andrew work extremely hard and represent not just New Zealand but our district with pride and energy. That's worth recognising.
Andrew is a proud local and loves to get out and thank his supporters whenever he is back in the country. We've recognised Andrew in our Te Awamutu Walk of Fame so hosting a public welcome home at Selwyn Park is the perfect location for this occasion.
The event will be held on Wednesday December 4 and is open to everyone. A guard of honour will be provided by local pony club members. There will also be a haka challenge fromTe Awamutu Intermediate.
