Council kicks off grandstand upgrade
24 September 2013
Te Awamutu's Albert Park grandstand refurbishment is one step closer with the confirmation of agreed funding from Waipa District Council to the Grandstand Community Trust.
Council had always budgeted $700,000 as its contribution to the upgrade and development of the grandstand. The money was included in the 2011/2012 annual plan and carried forward to the 2013/2014 annual plan. It was earmarked for public facilities, including new toilets and changing rooms plus an upgrade of the existing grandstand.
At its Council meeting today [September 24], Councillors were advised that the Trust had already independently raised $850,000 - meaning a total of $1.55 million had been secured.
However, unless Council provided the promised $700,000, the Trust was in danger of losing earlier funding commitments. On that basis, and on the basis of public facilities being completed first, the Council grant was confirmed for release in the first half of next year.
The wider project has an estimated cost of $2.3 million and includes the construction of new indoor sporting facilities including an artificial turf, cricket wicket, woven netting, netball goals, a crche, soccer goals and scoring equipment.
