Culture and heritage celebrated

Waipa's rich cultural and natural heritage was celebrated at an award ceremony in Ohaupo last night (October 2).
The event combined the biennial Heritage and Biodiversity Awards and attracted more than 80 people. For the first time supreme awards were given in both heritage and biodiversity categories.
The supreme heritage award went to Lauriston Park Retirement Village for Lauriston Park Homestead. The supreme biodiversity award was given to went to Pirongia Te Aroaro o Kahu Restoration Society for North Island Robin translocation project on Mount Pirongia. The award trophies were made by local glass artist Di Tocker.
The awards each had five categories and were presented by Waipa Mayor Alan Livingstone at his last official engagement. There were 13 nominees for the heritage wards and six for the biodiversity awards.
