Cyclists and drivers need to take care on Waipa’s roads
5 July 2013
The tragic death of a cyclist this week serves as a reminder that both drivers and cyclists need to take care on Waipa's roads.
The Waipa district is a popular place for road cycling, with the district's many rural roads providing some great riding for locals and visitors alike.
Ensuring the safety of cyclists on our roads is the responsibility of all road users, Waipa District Road Safety Co-ordinator Megan Jolly said.
The tragic incident that occurred is an unfortunate reminder that we all need to be careful, and we all need to share the road, Ms Jolly said.
Cyclists should always have lights and hi-visibility clothing, and remember that riding in single file is safer. Remember that in winter the light is poorer, making it more difficult for motorists to see cyclists.
Drivers should show the same caution and patience when passing an individual or a group of cyclists that they would to passing another vehicle. Remember that cyclists can often travel quite fast along rural roads, so ensure that you have plenty of space to pass and then pull safely over to the left afterwards, giving plenty of room to cyclists as you pass. Drivers should also remember that it is dangerous to pass cyclists on blind bends.
Let's all be careful on Waipa's roads, and keep them safe for cyclists and drivers alike, Ms Jolly said.
