Dead sheep highlight problem of rubbish dumping
4 July 2013
From bags of household rubbish to dead sheep, people dumping rubbish around the district are creating public health hazards and wasting ratepayer's money on the clean up.
Dead livestock and bags of rotting rubbish are among the most hazardous items that are dumped, often on the roadside, and the Waipa District Council is asking for the community's help to catch the offenders.
The dumping of rubbish by a small number of people is extremely frustrating for council and the public alike, Road Corridor Manager Dawn Inglis said.
Rubbish left in public places, especially animal carcasses, pose a serious health hazard and we're asking for the community to help us catch the offenders. If you see a vehicle dumping rubbish then take the number plate and report it to us as soon as possible.
From July 2012 to May 2013 the Council has spent approximately $44,000 cleaning up rubbish that has been dumped.
That's $44,000 that we could have spent on projects to improve the district, Ms Inglis said.
If the Council and community can work together on this one we'll help to keep Waipa beautiful.
