Event organisers seek help
11 August 2014Event organisers have applied for more than $200,000 in funding support from Waipa District Council.
However it's likely less than half that will be allocated when funding decisions are made at the end of this month.
Organisers have applied to the District Promotions Fund for help in staging events in the Waipa District. The $100,000 fund is aimed at attracting visitors to Waipa, encouraging better use of key sites and facilities and giving local residents the opportunity to enjoy events close to home.
This year, 43 events will compete for funding. They include waka ama, horse racing, cycling, rowing and BMX racing, Christmas events and musical and dance events (including a masquerade ball). The maximum support available to any one event is $10,000.
On August 25, members of the District Promotions Fund Committee will consider applications and decide on what events receive funding assistance. Committee members are Mayor Jim Mylchreest, Waipa District Councillors Sue Milner and John Bishop and community representatives Mervyn Gyde and Kevin Burgess.
