Get your nominations in for the Waipa Youth Awards
2 April 2012
Do you know an outstanding young person in the Waipa District who deserves recognition? Then we want to hear from you!
The Waipa District Council Youth Awards aim to recognise the outstanding achievements of Waipa youth in academics, arts and culture, community service, leadership and sport.
The awards are run annually under the umbrella of the Waipa Youth Council and are in their tenth year. They are open to young people aged 14-18 who live, or have attended school in the Waipa district for at least six months of the 2011 academic year.
Benefits of winning a youth award include improving future academic and scholarship opportunities and receiving cash prizes of $300 for Excellence and $200 for Merit or services in kind.
Mayor Alan Livingston said the awards keep getting better each year.
Nominations have more than doubled since the awards were first held in 2003 and it is a great opportunity to acknowledge the young talent we have in Waipa, he said.
Last year there were 86 nominations and 45 exceptional young people received recognition. Past recipients have included Pirongia-based band The Good Fun and Silver Fern Laura Langman.
The awards have been supported by a number of organisations and businesses including Rotary, Cambridge Business Networking International, Geon print and Storey Sport.
Nominations opened today and will close on Friday, May 11. Nomination forms are available from secondary schools, council offices and libraries and at www.waipadc.govt.nz.
