Have your say on proposal to boost safety outside schools
13 June 2013
A proposed amendment to Waipa District Council's speed bylaw is set to boost safety outside another two Waipa schools.
Last week the Council's Strategic Planning and Policy Committee agreed to consult with the community on temporarily lower the speed limit to 40 kilometres per hour outside Pekerau and Pirongia Schools.
This would mean the speed limit can be lowered from 50 kilometres per hour at the start and end of the school day, or any other time when children come and go from school. Signs are used to alert drivers as to when the lower speed limit is in operation.
Strategy Manager Gary Knighton said roads outside schools can be dangerous for children, and introducing variable speed limits in school zones was another tool to help ensure safety.
Pirongia School Principal Jan Cullen said the school was located on a busy road so the warning signs and speed restrictions that come with variable speed limits in school zones would be a welcome addition.
Anything that contributes to the safety of our children around the school gate is a positive move, Mrs Cullen said.
People have until July 12 to have their say on the proposed bylaw change.
