Heritage members appointed
3 March 2014Six people have been appointed to a new Waipa District Council committee charged with helping to promote, protect and enhance the district's natural, cultural, built, environmental and recreational heritage.
The new Heritage Committee replaces two previous advisory bodies - the Heritage Council and the Biodiversity Council. It administers and allocates Council's $70,000 Heritage Fund and makes recommendations to Council on heritage issues. It will also approve applications for the Heritage and Biodiversity Awards, develop a strategic vision for heritage in the district and provide comment on resource consent applications where appropriate.
Twelve individuals applied to join the committee. Council has now filled six places and intends seeking two more people with specific interest and expertise in the district's natural heritage and biodiversity.
Those already appointed to the committee are Fiona Low from the Historic Places Trust, senior planner Andrew McFarlane, architect Antanas Procuta, museums and heritage professional Stacey Ward, Iron Park museum owner Colin Pinkerton and historian and author Grant Middlemiss.
Waipa District Councillor Sue Milner chairs the committee, supported by Councillor Hazel Barnes.
