Land bought on Frontier Road for new reservoir
12 June 2013
Securing 24 hours of water storage for Te Awamutu has moved a step closer following approval being given to buy a piece of land for another reservoir to be built on.
Waipa District Council's Finance and Corporate Committee this week approved the purchase of almost a hectare of land on Frontier Road following successful negotiations with the land owner.
Water services manager Lorraine Kendrick said the site has been identified as the most suitable location for the construction of a 6000 cubic metre concrete reservoir as it was a prime position to serve both Te Awamutu and Pirongia.
The need for additional water storage for Te Awamutu to provide support during periods of low rainfall, particularly in summer, had been identified as part of the council's 10-Year Plan and funding for the design and build had been allocated in the next financial year, she said.
The council would now be seeking the appropriate consents and beginning the design process.
The intention is to design the reservoir to be below the maximum height limits for the rural zone which would be below the height that could be built for a residential dwelling or farm implementation shed on the site.
Nearby residents had been informed of the project and invited to contact the council with any queries, Mrs Kendrick said.
