Local students take awards
4 August 2014Former Te Awamutu College head student Holly Flay has won two awards for excellence at the Waipa Youth Awards, including in the prestigious multi-achiever category.
Another former Te Awamutu College student, Angus Seddon, was also recognised with an excellence award in the leadership category.
More than 100 young people were nominated for the 2014 awards - the highest number in its 12-year history. The awards are open to those aged 14-18 who live or have attended school in the Waipa district for at least six months of the 2013 academic year.
At a ceremony last week, 18-year old Holly was the only person to pick up two awards. Her list of achievements included four NCEA Level 3 excellence endorsements, winning five Top of Subject Cups for academic excellence, the AG Freeman Medal and Konica Minolta Award for Dux Literatum 2013 and Te Awamutu College's General Excellence Cup in Year 13 for academic, sports, culture, participation and service.
Angus' achievements included being the Te Awamutu College 2013 head student, winning Rotary Shield for Service to the School, captaining the first fifteen rugby team last year, winning Most Outstanding Player Award (first fifteen) and holding a position as a Keep Cool' mentor.
Holly and Angus joined six others who picked up excellence awards at the ceremony last week. Those who received awards for excellence were:
Academic: Holly Flay (Te Awamutu College); Arts and Culture: Harry Parsons (Cambridge High School); Community Service: Megan Hemming (Cambridge High School), Laura Smith (St Peter's); Leadership: Angus Seddon (Te Awamutu College); Multi-achiever: Holly Flay (Te Awamutu College); Sport: Sam Gaze, Nikita Howarth, Micah Wilkinson (all Cambridge High School)
In total, 64 awards were given out. The event is organised each year by the Waipa Youth Council.
