New look for town hall
10 February 2014
Cambridge's historic town hall is to get a fresh, new look.
The exterior of the hall, which is registered as a category two building with the Historic Places Trust, will be completely repainted along with the bus shelter and some items on the plaza.
Work will begin on the week of February 17 and, depending on weather, will be finished by early April. The work is part of scheduled maintenance and has been planned and budgeted for this financial year.
The new colour scheme has been approved by the Historic Places Trust and by Councillor Sue Milner who chairs Council's newly established Heritage Committee. Input was also sought from the Cambridge Community Board.
Hall users will be largely unaffected by the spruce-up. The hall frontage will be painted using a scissor lift and the two sides will be scaffolded. Entrances will be blocked only if the building is not in use.
The Cambridge town hall is 104 years old. It celebrated its centennial in November 2009 when it received a major internal upgrade of the foyer, entrance and toilet facilities.
