New reservoir for Te Awamutu

More than 8000 cubic metres of soil will be moved over the next three weeks as the first stage of a new water storage reservoir in Te Awamutu begins.
The soil will be moved onto the new site in Frontier Road about 2.5km from the town centre and will sit there for about three months to compact and settle movement in the land before the reservoir is built. The process, called preloading, means more than 20 truck and trailer loads of soil per day will be moved onto the site and then removed in three months' time.
Waipa District Council group manager service delivery Barry Bergin said the preloading process was important to ensure the ground was sufficiently compacted for when the weight of the reservoir and water arrived on the site.
The new reservoir will hold 6000 cubic metres (the equivalent of three Olympic sized swimming pools) of water; it will be eight and half metres high and 35 meters in diameter and is expected to be completed by late 2014. Council will plant more than 2000 trees and shrubs around the perimeter of the site to lessen the impact of the reservoir on the rural landscape.
The estimated cost of the project is $5.2 million with $3.2 million set aside this financial year.
This reservoir will support both the Te Awamutu and Pirongia townships as well as providing extra capacity in peak times and for fire fighting purposes. It should also address some of the water pressure issues currently experienced in both towns, he said.
