New Waipa Heritage Committee
3 December 2013
Protecting and promoting Waipa's heritage has gained greater recognition with the setting up of a new council committee.
The new 10-member Heritage Committee will replace two previous advisory bodies - the Heritage Council and the Bio-diversity Council. Councillor Sue Milner will chair the committee and be supported by Councillor Hazel Barnes with the remaining members being appointed from the community.
The committee's key role will be to administer and allocate council's $70,000 Heritage Fund and make recommendations to Council on heritage issues.
Waipa District Council Mayor Jim Mylchreest said the new committee brought the district's heritage to the forefront of council when decisions that could affect heritage were being made.
This committee means we don't lose sight of our past and acknowledge the importance the district's heritage plays in shaping our future, he said.
Townships in our district have rich histories and we want to make sure they are not lost as our towns grow.
Chair Cr Milner said natural heritage and heritage buildings were jewels in the crown of the Waipa district and it was important to ensure they were well looked after.
The frequency of committee meetings is still to be decided.
