Rose gardens get new watering system
19 September 2013
Plants at the Te Awamutu Rose Gardens should feel perkier this summer following the installation of a new watering system.
The $12,000 watering system was part of a wider garden review that looked to make the running of the gardens more efficient. By analysing and monitoring irrigation output, soil types and root depth Waipa District Council has been able to more accurately care for the plants.
Council's Group Manager Service Delivery, Barry Bergin said better knowledge and planning will mean the roses have less disease (fungi infections) on foliage which in turn means council uses less chemicals on the plants.
If we do this well it also means we better manage a finite water supply, especially in the summer months when accurate watering means no waste and the roses still thrive, he said.
About 1700m of pipe and 180 new pop up sprinklers also means less maintenance and water loss from the old above ground structure. The sprinklers water about 1500 rose plants in 55 beds.
