Temporary roundabout on Shakespeare Street
15 January 2014
A temporary roundabout has been put in place at the SH1/Shakespeare Street intersection to help with traffic flows while Victoria Bridge is reduced to one lane for four months for repairs.
Work on the 106 year old bridge will begin in late January 2014 and will include widening the footpaths by 400mm to ensure both pedestrians, mobility scooter drivers and cyclists had a safe route across the bridge and carrying out repairs to the bridge structure.
The bridge sits 35.4m above the Waikato River, spans 141m and has a Historic Places Trust Category 1 classification.
For much of the project, Victoria Bridge will be reduced to a single lane only allowing traffic coming from Cambridge town to the Leamington side. There is potential also for a limited number of full closures during the night.
Access to Settlers track from Dominion Avenue will be closed off during the project to enable materials to be removed and delivered without placing the public at risk.
