Traffic lights on in Cambridge

Waipa's first ever council-owned set of traffic lights will be turned on next week.

From next Monday (December 5) traffic lights will control the intersection of Norfolk Drive and Victoria Road in Cambridge.

The traffic lights are part of a wider project recently completed in Cambridge North. The project, which included the extension of Norfolk Drive, connects Cambridge North to the rest of the town and also allows for forecast growth. Other work included widening Victoria Road, installing wastewater and storm water infrastructure, building a shared footpath/cycleway and installing new pedestrian crossings, kerbing and planting.

The lights will be turned on at 10am Monday morning and Norfolk Drive will be open to traffic at the same time.

The completion of one project has signaled the beginning of another in Cambridge North with physical work on a $1.6 million project involving Swayne Road, Bowen Street and Taylor Street now underway. It includes upgrading stormwater and wastewater systems, installing a new sewer pipe and providing new footpaths, car parks and street lighting.

A mini roundabout will be built at the Bowen St-Taylor St intersection, similar to that at the Alpha St-Empire St intersection.

Group manager service delivery Barry Bergin has acknowledged the level of ongoing work in Cambridge North and has urged motorists and cyclists to take extra care when travelling on Victoria Road.

There are a lot of roadworks about - we acknowledge that, he said. We really need people to be mindful of the new lights in particular, and to be patient with others so everyone can get used to the new layout.

The lights are the first set in Waipa installed and owned by Waipa District Council. Other traffic lights in the district are owned and operated by the NZ Transport Agency and help control traffic on the State Highway network.
