Waipa awash with talented youngsters
16 June 2014
More than 100 outstanding young people have been nominated in the Waipa Youth Awards.
It is the highest number of nominations ever in the awards' 12-year history. Last year 88 nominations were received.
The awards are open to young people aged 14-18 who live or have attended school in the Waipa district for at least six months of the 2013 academic year.
The annual awards recognise outstanding achievements in six categories: academic (13 nominations), arts and culture (21 nominations), community service (10 nominations), leadership (nine nominations), sport (38 nominations) and multi-achievers (15 nominations).
Waipa's Youth Council runs the awards which are supported by a number of business and organisations including Kihikihi, Te Awamutu and Cambridge Rotary Clubs, Cambridge Lions, Cambridge Business Networking International, CMYK and Storey Sport.
Award judges are Dr Karsten Zegwaard and Sandhya Coll (academic), John Drummond and Michelle Flint (arts and culture), Barbara Taranaki and Richard Hurrell (community service), John Parker and Mike Maquire (sport) and Alan Livingston and Katherine O'Regan (leadership and multi-achiever).
Award winners will be announced at a function at St Peter's School at the end of July.
