Waste projects supported
19 May 2014
Reusable nappies have been given the thumbs-up from Waipa District Council.
The council has supported a project that will provide 100 Waipa families with trial packs of cloth nappies plus deliver workshops in Te Awamutu and Cambridge promoting their use.
The nappy project, which received just over $6,000, was one of 10 successful applications to the Waste Minimisation Fund, a government-funded initiative. The fund was established to support individuals, groups and businesses to develop projects based on minimising waste. Funds are from the Ministry for the Environment; they do not come from Waipa ratepayers.
There were 13 applications to the fund this year, seeking more than $62,000. Just over $40,000 was allocated. Grants are available up to $10,000 with some discretion to consider larger projects.
Projects supported by the fund must specifically benefit the Waipa district. This year, many projects were focused on priority areas including organic and commercial waste, resource recovery initiatives and data collection and auditing. Waste disposal or clean ups were not funded.

The Nappy Lady - to promote reusable nappies | $6308.00 |
