Work to begin soon on reservoir

Work is expected to begin on a new water storage reservoir for Te Awamutu in early April and be completed by the end of this year.

Spartan Construction Ltd was the successful tenderer for the $3.4 million contract to build the new structure.

The new concrete reservoir will hold 6,000 cubic metres (the equivalent of three Olympic sized swimming pools) of water; it will be eight and half metres high and 35 meters in diameter and is expected to be completed by late 2014. Waipa District Council will plant more than 2,000 trees and shrubs around the perimeter of the site to lessen the impact of the reservoir on the rural landscape.

The estimated total cost of the project is $5 million which includes other costs such as design, land purchase, consents. It also includes the preloading contract which has seen more than 8,000 cubic metres of soil moved onto the new site in Frontier Road about 2.5km from the town centre.

Manager water services,Lorraine Kendrick said the reservoir will support both the Te Awamutu and Pirongia townships as well as provide extra capacity for emergency management and fire fighting.

Work will begin on removing the preload soil in the coming weeks before the construction of the reservoir begins early next month.
