Upgrade for Shakespeare Street toilets
The toilet block on Shakespeare Street in Leamington is undergoing a six-week makeover as part of the Council’s public conveniences renewal programme.
Waipā District Council manager – community services, Brad Ward, said the initial upgrade of the facility was due to take place in May but was postponed due to delays in the tender process.
“The Shakespeare Street toilets are in a busy location with plenty of patrons stopping to use the facilities as they pass through,” Ward said.
”We know the loos are a bit tired, worn and in need of a refurbishment so it’s good to get this underway.”
“The aim is to bring Council-owned public toilet assets up to a higher standard so they meet public expectations with a focus on longevity and sustainability.”
Work includes the replacement of the toilets pans, wash-basin benches, internal doors and partitioning, changing table and rest seats.
“It also includes installation of new wall tiles, lighting, soap dispensers, new flooring, painting of the internal walls, and ceilings,” Ward said. “So it’s going to look quite swish and fresh when complete.”
Te Awamutu-based contractor Ridgeline Homes Limited will undertake the construction work which will cost about $108,000.
“The closest alternative public toilets are located at Leamington Domain on the corner of Wordsworth and Scott streets,” Ward said.
“We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause. We hope the community and users enjoy the improvements.”
