Work on Cambridge’s new walking and cycling pathway is full steam ahead with construction starting on Duke and Wilson Street.
Works started today on Duke Street between Dick and Wilson Street and will start on Monday (15 January) on Wilson Street. During the works, Wilson Street will be down to one lane with traffic access from the Duke Street end. Traffic will not be able to access Wilson Street from Victoria Street. Duke Street will remain two-way during construction.
Project Manager, Erik Van Der Wel said the construction on Duke Street has been timed so majority of the work would be completed before the start of the school year to minimise disruption to Cambridge Primary School.
The Wilson Street works are expected to be completed before May 2024.
“We acknowledge Wilson Street is a busy road and the work will create delays. Our contractors will be working hard to get it completed as quickly as possible, while ensuring people are still able to access their businesses and homes,” he said.
A meeting was held with emergency services in December to discuss the effect of the work on their traffic routes. Council staff are continuing to work with affected parties on parking.
Construction on the pathway began in October last year. The first stage saw the pathway extended down Hamilton Road to Bryce Street. Work is continuing on Bryce Street.
Waka Kotahi provided $7.2 million in funding for the pathway as part of its programme to create more transport choices across New Zealand and help people safely opt out of using vehicles. The remaining $3 million has come from Council’s Long-Term Plan 2021 – 2031 budget for urban mobility projects.
