Walton Street roading and toilet upgrades
Work will start on Monday, 29 April to reconfigure Walton Street to become a one-way entry from Redoubt Street, improve pedestrian safety and upgrade the toilets.
The finance and corporate committee approved Walton Street becoming a one-way street on Tuesday, 16 April.
The toilets will also be replaced because they are at the end of their life and there are ongoing maintenance issues. The current location in the road corridor is also unsafe.
All this work will:
- create safe access to the new toilets,
- enable space for the footpaths to be extended and upgraded,
- improve mobility access,
- add seating areas and,
- add some additional carparks.
The hours of work will be 7am – 5:30pm during weekdays and is expected to be completed by the end of June.
There will be various temporary traffic management setups needed for different stages of construction, and there will be times when Walton Street will need to be closed to through traffic. Our contractors will do their best to keep the road open, when it is safe to do so.
Businesses, staff, customers, clients and service providers will have access to the area, from Redoubt Street, during this time. People can speak to one of the crew onsite who can help with their access needs.
During construction, on-street parking will be unavailable, but businesses private parking will still be accessible. Our team will assist traffic and pedestrians to access the area, when it is safe to do so. Safety ramps may be in place around the site as various sections of work are underway.
Our contractors will make a temporary space for loading bays and advise businesses in advance of any changes. There may be times when the current loading bays and entrance ways on Walton and Roche Streets will be unavailable. We are asking businesses to inform their suppliers and delivery drivers of the works, although our contractors will do all they can to ensure people are aware of any limited access beforehand.
To ensure everyone can get around the area safely, we have marked out designated pathways and signposted directions around the site for both pedestrians and vehicles.
Our contractor will keep in touch with affected businesses so that everyone can plan ahead.
