Cambridge folk quick to have say

More than 150 people have formally had their say on plans for the new entrance into Cambridge.
Waipa District Council says there is still time for people to get involved with comments and suggestions welcome until August 3.
Last Thursday around 300 people attended an open session hosted by council staff and involving the NZ Transport Agency and those behind the Lakewood Development. The session advised people first-hand what was planned for the roundabout by St Andrew's church, as well as longer term plans for Lake Te Ko Utu and changes proposed for Lake, Whittaker and Queen Streets.
People queued for walking tours hosted by council staff which clearly identified the 12 trees and shrubs to be removed to make room for the roundabout. Detail was also provided about the potential placement of Lake Te Ko Utu's historic gates.
A representative from the Lakewood Developments was on hand to reassure people that, despite rumours to the contrary, there was no plans to cut down trees to secure lake views.
Group manager service delivery Barry Bergin said the session was very worthwhile.
"There's been an awful lot of community comment, not all of it well informed. So this was a good chance for people to find out exactly what was proposed and why," he said.
"A number of people went away feeling reassured and some said they were actually really excited about the plans and about what they saw as the quite careful development of Cambridge."
The Council wants specific feedback on key design options including what should be in the middle of the new roundabout. So far most people have indicated they want a large feature tree planted with flowerbeds and feature paving in the median strips. There is strong support for the gates to be moved to a more prominent position.
