Cambridge roundabout to begin in the new year
20 December 2016
Work to build a new roundabout at the intersection of Victoria and Cambridge Roads will begin on 4 January 2017.
Waipa District Council have confirmed Civil Construction Services will manage the $3.1 million project, which includes a suite of work to improve the entrance into Cambridge.
The majority of the work is expected to be completed by mid-April with landscaping and final touches planned for May.
Initial work will include surveying, the removal of several trees, the permanent closure of Lake Street and opening the intersection of Lake and Queen Street. As work progresses a 30km/h speed limit will be in place and there will be traffic management. It is also likely that some diversions will be needed at a later date. Pedestrian and cycle access will be maintained at all times.
Waipa District Council's roading manager Bryan Hudson said Council and the contractor will update the community throughout the project.
Building a new roundabout is a significant piece of work and there is likely to be some disruption over the next few months, but please be assured we'll be working to keep this to a minimum.
Hudson said the project was long awaited, the intersection has always been a challenge, we're confident the end result will be a safer system for motorists, cyclists and pedestrians.
The roundabout, jointly funded by the NZ Transport Agency and Waipa District Council, includes a landscaped median strip between Victoria Road and Queen Street, the closure of part of Lake Street bordering Lake Te Ko Utu, two laning Whittaker Street to connect the proposed Lake Street development and changing the existing median strip on Queen Street to allow traffic to turn right into Lake Street.
Plans also include new pathways and cycleways, improved footpaths and street lighting, pedestrian crossings on Queen Street, Victoria Street and Hamilton Road and more parking by the lake.
Waipa District Council is providing an electronic newsletter to keep everyone up to date with the project. To sign up go to www.waipadc.govt.nz/cambridgeroundabout.
