Community invited to a day to play
11 April 2011
Waipa District Council staff are organising two community events aimed at celebrating everything great about living, working and playing in the Waipa district.
The events, one at Albert Park in Te Awamutu (Saturday, April 30) and one at the Leamington polo grounds in Cambridge (Saturday, May 7) have been dubbed A Day to Play' and will involve local schools and community groups.
A number of Waipa businesses, including Bunnings, Pak n Save, New World, Mitre 10 Mega and BNZ are supporting the events with prizes and in-kind support.
Prizes will be offered for the best kites in four different categories: Waipa Home of Champions; a great place to live; a great place to work and a great place to play. There are no rules' on what kind of kites can and can't be flown.
Waipa District Council chief executive Garry Dyet said the day was simply about coming together as a community and celebrating everything Waipa had to offer.
"Our district offers a huge amount in terms of lifestyle and opportunity - it's something that people comment on often. We have some amazing facilities, an extraordinary natural environment and obviously some amazing people here, so this is simply a chance to recognise and celebrate that in a fun way," Mr Dyet said.
"Anyone, of any age, can fly a kite and they're not expensive to make. We're hoping for a couple of great family afternoons."
A number of Waipa district council staff will be volunteering at the event as part of the organisation's commitment to community service. Throughout the year, council staff are encouraged to give one day to assist with a community event or project of their choosing. This year staff have already been involved in tree plantings, river clean-ups and a wide range of community-based projects.
A range of food vendors and entertainers would also be present on both days. Entry to the event is free.
