Council signs off drone use policy

Waipa District Council has allowed drone operators to fly over most parks and reserves but have set some prohibited areas for the safety of the public.

This is a fairly permissive approach to new Civil Aviation Authority rules that require drone operators to get approval from property owners or occupiers before flying.

Council's Legal and Corporate Support Manager Jennie McFarlane says the policy requires the common sense of drone operators and will be developed further as the technology advances.

Drone operators are encouraged to check our website which explains where they can and can't fly, and if they haven't already - read up on the new Civil Aviation Authority rules, says Ms McFarlane.

The introduction of the policy and maps mean users won't have to approach Council for permission, but they will still require the consent of anyone they are flying the drone over and must comply with CAA rules .

Drone prohibited areas in Waipa include:

• Council office buildings, libraries, museums, depots, treatment plants, dog pounds and cemeteries and associated entry, exit and car parking areas.
• Victoria Square, the Town Hall plaza.
• Lake Te Koo Utu Park in Cambridge.
• The Memorial Park in Te Awamutu.
• Any playground areas in Council reserves, parks or facilities.
• Any Council reserve or property areas with horses or stock.
