Cycleway nearly complete

Cambridge's town belt cycleway and walkway should be complete by March next year.

Already six kilometres of the trail are being well used including new sections around Carlyle, Lamb and Shelley Streets. The section connecting Cambridge Park to Thompson Street was finished in September.

Before Christmas, Waipa District Council will call for tenders for the final section; a 350m wooden boardwalk across the Shelley Street wetland connecting Shelley Street to Rowling Place. The design has been finalised and site work will be undertaken during the summer.

Council has part-funded the Cambridge town belt cycleway, providing more than $200,000 to the project over two and a half years. The rest of the money - more than $100,000 - was raised privately. Council staff are responsible for maintaining the compacted metal track, including maintenance of the adjoining parks, reserves and berms.

Council's parks and reserves team leader Max Ward says feedback about the cycleway and walkway continues to beoverwhelmingly positive.

It is really popular with families and we're expecting even heavier use once summer kicks in, he said.
