First Past the Post voting system to stay

Waipa District Council has opted to retain the First Past the Post voting system for the next two local body elections.

The decision means that the candidates with the highest number of votes will be elected in both the 2013 and 2016 elections unless residents choose to demand a poll for an alternative system.

The other option is the Single Transferrable Vote system used by District Health Boards. That system requires voters to rank candidates in order of preference.

A poll can be demanded by at least 5 percent of eligible electors putting their name, address, and signature on a petition.

Should a poll be held, more than 50 percent of the votes cast would need to be in favour for the electoral system to change.

A petition would need to be received by February 28 for a change to be considered.

The First Past the Post System is used by the majority of local authorities.
