Funding available for waste initiatives
16 January 2015If you reduce, reuse or recycle, you could be eligible for a financial boost from Waipa District Council.
Council has set aside $40,000 a year to support individuals, groups and businesses to develop projects based on minimising waste. The funds are provided to Council by the Ministry for the Environment from the Waste Levy.
Grants are available up to $10,000 with some discretion to consider larger projects.
Waste Minimisation Officer, Hope Williams said Council was looking for creative, innovative or just plain simple projects that really helped the community to focus on reducing how much was wasted each day.
Last year we funded some really unique projects. From compost bins and paper brick makers, to reusable nappy workshops - we were impressed by ideas and projects people in Waipa were working on to help reduce waste.
We are keen to hear from anyone who has a waste reduction project that will create some long-term change in the way people think and what they do about waste.
Applications for grants need to benefit the Waipa district. Those applying could include community groups, schools, early childhood centres, iwi/Maori organisations or local businesses.
Projects should be focused on priority areas including organic and commercial waste, resource recovery initiatives and data collection and auditing. Council would not be funding waste disposal or clean ups.
Applications are open from 19 January through to 27 February 2014.
To apply, visit www.waipadc.govt.nz or phone 0800 924 723 for further information.
