Library earthworks to begin
20 November 2015
Earthworks for Te Awamutu's new library will be underway by the beginning of December.
Waipa District Council approved the concept plans for a new 1400 square meter, $4.4 million building in August. It will include a solar power system plus a shared community space for wider use.
A formal site blessing on the corner of Mahoe Street and Selwyn Lane will be held next Friday (November 27) morning led by local kaumatua Charlie Maikuku and mayor Jim Mylchreest. Earthmoving work will begin the following week.
Project manager Lorraine Kendrick said during December earthworks for the building foundation and underground services would begin.
After Christmas people will start to see construction work on the actual building begin in earnest - and that's when it will start to look really exciting.
Fletcher Construction has been awarded the contract to build the library which is scheduled to open at the end of 2016.
Te Awamutu's existing library is now too small for the community and cannot provide some of the programmes offered by most other libraries. Its design also makes it difficult for some people, particularly older people, to use.
Nearly 31,500 people are active library members in the Waipa district. Library services have been provided in Te Awamutu since 1874.
