Library to highlight local design

The foyer and community space in Te Awamutu's new library is likely to feature design work from several local artists.

Last month, Waipa District Council launched a search to find a unique design for the aluminium filigree structure on the outside walls of the library to be built next year.

Twenty designs were put forward for consideration by a design panel made up of local artists, elected councillors and community representatives.

Manager, project delivery Lorraine Kendrick said after much angst, the panel had felt unable to choose just one design.

The technical requirements mean that some of the designs wouldn't have translated well onto the aluminium. But we didn't want to lose the thinking behind them so have asked the architects to create a design for the outside walls by January next year that builds on the best of what was submitted, she said.

We are hoping to use many elements from the submitted designs in the community space and foyer areas. The technical requirements won't be as restrictive and it means we can showcase more local artwork.

Kendrick said good progress on the library project was being made. The building consent was to be lodged with Waipa District Council this week with building work scheduled to start early in the new year. The library is due to open at the end of 2016.
