Candidate nominations open this Friday
17 July 2019
If you want to make a difference in your community, it's time to stand for local election.
Waipa District Council will be taking candidate nominations for the roles of mayor, councillor and community board member from Friday 19 July 2019 until Friday 16 August at 12 noon. Voting for local elections will be held later this year between 20 September and 12 October 2019.
Chief executive Garry Dyet encourages people interested in leading Waipa for the next three years to stand.
Our elected Council can make decisions that impact all Waipā residents on a daily basis, including around roads, parks and reserves, toilets, dogs, town planning, wastewater, stormwater and water supply, Dyet explains.
Council is a large, complex business. We have a capital works programme over $120 million, manage $1.7 billion in assets and employ 300 staff across two offices. We are in an exciting period of growth in our district where good governance, great financial management and good risk management will be essential over the next three years.
Waipa District Council has two local boards, one in Te Awamutu covering Te Awamutu and Kakepuku wards and one in Cambridge, covering Cambridge and Maungatautari boards. There are 13 councillors and 11 community board member positions available, plus one mayor.
Cambridge has five ward councillors and five community board members;
Te Awamutu has four ward councillors and four community board members;
Pirongia has two ward councillors;
Kakepuku has one ward councillor and one Te Awamutu community board member;
Maungatautari has one ward councillor and one Cambridge community board member.
Information about roles and responsibilities for each role and candidate nomination forms are available under Candidate information at www.waipadc.govt.nz/elections. Forms can also be picked up in person at Cambridge and Te Awamutu council offices.
Candidates must be nominated by two people and provide a full colour photo as well as proof of New Zealand citizenship or residency. Candidates cannot self-nominate.
In addition to Waipa District Council, candidate nominations are also open for Waikato Regional Council elected members. Candidates can stand to represent the Waipa-King Country Constituency or Nga Tai Ki Uta Constituency for Waikato Regional Council.
All candidate nominations must be received in full by 12 noon, Friday 16 August 2019. No forms provided after 12pm will be accepted.
