Major works for Cambridge north

Physical work will begin next week on major road and services upgrades for Cambridge north.

The $1.6 million project involving Swayne Road, Bowen Street and Taylor Street includes upgrading stormwater and wastewater systems, installing a new sewer pipe and providing new footpaths, car parks and street lighting.

A mini roundabout will be built at the Bowen St-Taylor St intersection, similar to that at the Alpha St-Empire St intersection.

Waipa District Council's project delivery manager Koos Lelieveld said traffic calming measures, including pedestrian refuge islands and the roundabout would ensure better and safer traffic movements around Cambridge High School. To ensure no disruption to students, work has been planned around NCEA exams. Schick Civil Construction will undertake the work which should be finished around February next year.

The project is part of suite of works either planned for or already underway in Cambridge north to cope with growth. Next week the contractor will start work in Taylor Street between Weld and Grosvenor Streets to begin construction of new car parks. When complete there will be 30 new angle parks on Taylor Street and a further six new parallel parks on Swayne Road.

The work may cause some short-term disruption and impact on some private driveways. But the contractors will make every effort to ensure access to properties is maintained, Lelieveld said.

Later this month stormwater pipes will be installed from the Bowen St-King St intersection towards Cambridge High School. Traffic is likely to be reduced to one lane for a short time.
