Make your mark on Te Awamutu
10 September 2015
Sharpen your pencils Waipa; your designs could grace the outside walls of Te Awamutu's new library.
With the library design now confirmed, Council is calling for people to submit designs to be incorporated onto the panels of the exterior walls (the filigree structure).
Council is looking for designs which are ageless, elegant and add a unique look to what will become Te Awamutu's new community focal point.
Project delivery manager Lorraine Kendrick said while there are some conditions around what could and couldn't go up on the walls, the design will give the library a look like that is unique to Waipa.
The project team is after a design that is friendly and welcoming. We also have to balance what we want with what will work on the walls, Kendrick said.
Our local architect and designers have suggested that a patterned design rather than a full image will work better due to the material being used and also because the filigree structure is not a solid wall.
The design panels will be made of aluminium so designs must also be grey scale.
Once all design entries have been received, they will be narrowed down to two or three by a design group submission panel. This panel will include councillors and Te Awamutu community board members and will be supported by the technical project team.
A final decision will be made by the mayor and councillors at the service delivery committee meeting on November 17.
Waipa Mayor Jim Mylchreest is looking forward to seeing what ideas people have to offer.
Libraries are more than what people often perceive as a place just to store books. They provide core connections in the community - they connect people, knowledge, ideas and imagination and for us specifically, the new library will become the anchor of Te Awamutu's much awaited community hub.
Libraries play a crucial role in our community and we are really keen to see what ideas are out there.
Entries are welcome until 5pm 29 September.
