Much valued roundabout soon to be permanent
With the new year, comes a new roundabout for Cambridge as the Shakespeare St/State Highway 1 temporary one becomes permanent.
Earlier this year, a temporary roundabout was constructed at the intersection to help control traffic flows during the Victoria Bridge footpath upgrade.
Waipa District Council's Road Corridor Manager, Koos Lelieveld said the temporary roundabout has worked very well and there is strong support from all sectors of the community for the roundabout to stay.
Construction will start in mid-January and should take around six weeks to complete. As much of the work as possible will be completed at night to minimise disruption but people should still expect some delays.
NZTA and the Waipa District Council's Roading Engineers worked closely on an affordable roundabout design that would improve the safety and capacity issues.
The work involves the widening of lanes, improving turning circles and cambers, lengthening merging zones and all islands will be replaced with permanent structures.
Further details will be made available in the New Year.
